The Value of Fence Post Finials

Wood fence post finials serve an important function that is often overlooked: protecting the top of a post. Most of us don’t realize how important it is to do so because we assume that if wood is treated, it will last a long time.

The problem is, with a round post, the wood is treated when it is green and freshly sawn, but it’s hard to treat green wood. The treatment protects the outside of the post, but the inside is still susceptible to rotting, especially if water gets into the ends of the post. This can cause the ends to rot.

Square fence posts are treated when they’re dry. However, if you don’t keep water from getting on the end grain, it can develop mold, mildew, and moss. The wet environment will cause the post to rot. Plus, the top of a fence post is most susceptible to sun and wind, which can dry the wood and make it crack.

One of the simplest ways to solve this is to install a finial over the top of each post. Instead of the end grain taking a beating, the finial stands up to the elements. This makes wood fence posts both decorative and functional.

Gothic Top Finials Provide Further Protection

Gothic top finials don’t just protect the end of a fence or deck post; they may also deter animals. The pointed top of the finial discourages squirrels and birds from sitting on the post. They’re also an easy way to enhance the look of exterior posts by adding a decorative element.

Consider using gothic top finials to cover the top of a post that is just starting to decay. Cut the decayed part off and turn in a finial. You’ll be amazed at how differently the fence looks.

You can even get gothic fence pickets to match gothic top finials.

Wood Choices and Sizes of Gothic Top Finials

Gothic top finials are available in pressure treated or Western Red Cedar. The cedar will weather naturally to a beautiful grey color with a smooth, fine grained texture. The pressure treated ones should be protected with a high-quality paint or stain to keep it from cracking and splitting.

Gothic finials come in 4×4 and 6×6 to accommodate the most popular post sizes.
